Pressure-sensitive self-adhesive tape consists of a film and an adhesive substance that adhere to a certain surface by means of a slight pressure which, if applied manually, obviously cannot be constant throughout the working day; moreover, having the glue mainly of petroleum derivation, it must be specially disposed of and certainly cannot be considered “environmentally friendly”.

The presence of dust on the cardboard, the different climatic temperature conditions during transport and the possible age of the self-adhesive tape “from storage in the warehouse”, do not guarantee the seal of the package.

Water-activated tape (WAT), on the other hand, is mainly designed with Kraft paper tape or recycled paper in white or natural color. The adhesive is made from starch. It is generally available in various widths and thicknesses and can be made with different reinforcement possibilities. The adhesive is activated with water and, by penetrating the cardboard material, gives the tape a permanent bond with the packaging, effectively sealing the package.

The use of water-activated WAT discourages theft because it is particularly difficult to remove without leaving obvious signs of tampering. The fact that it literally “merges” with the cardboard makes the burglar-proof closure of the packaging guaranteed. During the shipping process, theft generally occurs because it is easy “to do” and difficult to “locate”; with WAT tape, anti-burglary is ensured and in the event of tampering attempt, the evidence is immediately detectable.

Evaluating the cost-effectiveness on the basis of an equal comparison of surface area per square meter, WAT tape is, in the versions with reinforcement, more expensive than simple self-adhesive. However, since only one strip of tape is needed to seal a carton tightly, the differential between the two materials being compared usually disappears as users often use two or three strips of self-adhesive tape. Together with this advantage, further cost savings are obtained from the absence of theft associated with WAT tape and the possibility of disposing of packaging in a single solution without any separation of materials.

As stated above, the water-activated WAT tape does not suffer from any criticality; It performs well in extreme conditions of cold, heat, light, humidity and dirt, keeping its bonding and holding properties at the highest level at all times.
